English Lesson Plan

Topic of lesson:              Past Tense
Language Skill:              Grammar
Level of students:           Beginner (Standard 2, Primary School)
School:                            Sekolah Kebangsaan Taman Sri Gombak
Time:                              8.30 a.m. – 9.30 a.m. (Two periods, 60 minutes)

Objectives:
a)      Students will be able to correctly identify past tense verbs within a sentence.
b)      Students will be able to use past tense to tell an event that happened in the past and form questions using the past tense.

Teaching Aids: Online Interactive Games  (ESL Games World)

Learning Outcomes: 
a)      By the end of the lesson, students should be able to utilize online interactive games sites to help them in their learning.
b)      By the end of the lesson, students should be able to use past tense verbs to describe past events.
c)      By the end of the lesson, students should be able to convert present tense verbs to past tense.

Materials required for the lesson: Assessment papers.

Procedure:  The teacher will give a short induction for 20 minutes to briefly introduce about the lesson of the day to the students and class activities for 40 minutes of the lesson.

Step 1

15 minutes
Past Tense

1) Teacher starts the lesson by defining ‘verb’.

2) She then tells them they are going to learn the Past Tense.

3) Teacher writes a few examples of verbs in Past Tense form and makes simple sentences from them.

1. The teacher asks the pupils some verbs they know. If they answer it in the right form (Past Tense), the teacher will construct sentences without having to correct them first.

2. If they answer her by giving verbs in other forms  (e.g. Present Tense), the teacher will correct them first before writing sentences in the right form.

3. The teacher facilitates them from time to time.

1. To test the pupils’ understanding based on the teacher’s explanations.
2. To initiate communication between the teacher and the pupils.

3. To develop their thinking skills.

20 minutes
Drill Activities

1) The teacher asks the pupils to switch on the computers.

2) While they are switching on their computers, the teacher tells the pupils that there will be an evaluation at the end of the lesson.

3) Pupils are instructed to go to the World Wide Web for some drill activities.

1. The pupils are instructed to type a link provided by the teacher on the keyboard.

2. The teacher goes round to ensure that the pupils open the right link.

3. The teacher instructs them to play the interactive games on the link provided in a given time.

4. The teacher assists them in case there are some words in the games that they do not understand.

1) To test whether the pupils can follow the instructions given.

2) To determine whether the pupils can apply what they have learnt in the lesson using the evaluation sheet later.
Step 3
15 minutes
Evaluating session

1. Each pupil will be given a set of questions based on the exam format.

2. The questions will be divided into three parts.

A -  Tick the Right Answer
B – Fill In the Blanks
C – Crossword Puzzle

1. The pupils answer all the questions in a given time.

2. The teacher keeps an eye on the students to ensure that they do not copy each other’s answers.

Recap  and closure

Recalling what they have learnt in today’s lesson.
